Yaw sat at his desk, staring at the email that had just popped into his inbox. His manager, Mr. Adjei, had sent him an offer he’d always dreamed of: a promotion to Senior Project Manager. It came with a significant pay increase, a prestigious title, and the promise of new challenges. Yet, as exciting as it seemed, Yaw couldn’t shake the unease creeping up his spine.
For the past two years, Yaw had poured himself into his job. Late nights at the office, weekend calls, and barely-there vacations had brought him recognition and accolades—but at a price. His sister, Esi, had often teased him about being a “ghost” in the family, and his friends had stopped inviting him out because they knew he’d always decline.
Yaw sighed deeply. The promotion would demand even more of his time and energy. It meant managing an additional team, traveling frequently, and being on-call 24/7 for key projects.
That evening, Yaw met his best friend, Kofi, at their favorite waakye spot. Over bowls of steaming rice and beans, he poured out his dilemma.
“I’ve worked so hard for this,” Yaw said. “But at the same time, I feel like I’m losing myself. I miss spending time with family. I miss… just living.”
Kofi nodded thoughtfully. “Bro, let me ask you something: What does success look like to you? Is it just the money and the title, or is it having peace of mind too?”
Yaw didn’t respond immediately, but those words lingered with him all weekend.
The next Monday, Yaw walked into Mr. Adjei’s office, ready to give his answer.
“Yaw!” his boss said with a smile. “I hope you’ve made the right decision. We’re all rooting for you.”
Yaw smiled back, feeling calmer than he had in weeks. “Sir, I’m incredibly honored by the offer. But after much thought, I’ve realized that I need to focus on finding balance in my life. I’m grateful, but I’ll have to decline the promotion.”
There was a brief silence before Mr. Adjei leaned forward. “I respect your decision, Yaw. And I’ll let you in on a little secret: balance is something I’m still trying to figure out myself. Let’s revisit this conversation when you’re ready.”
Yaw left the office feeling lighter than he’d felt in years. For the first time in a long time, he put himself first—and it felt like the right kind of success.
